COLD HANDS AND FEET

Hi,
I suffer from a fairly severe form of Raynaud's disease (primary Raynaud's phenomenon). This results in poor blood circulation, particularly to my hands and feet and I constantly feel cold. What books would you prescribe to help me manage my condition?
Yours,
Raynaud's Sufferer
Dear Raynaud's sufferer,
We very much sympathise, as this is something that we have recently encountered ourselves! Be comforted in knowing that you are not alone, we have heard that one in ten people suffer from this, though not severely. An illustrious sufferer is Lionel Shriver, who wears gloves constantly so as to keep the cold at bay. She also does two hundred sit-ups every morning, which might help her. Apart from keeping warm, our best advice is to stay inside and read books that encourage you to keep your hands moving, and feel a sense of warmth emanating from them. Swedish and Finnish authors who write about saunas would be excellent company for you, and Maile Chapman's Your Presence is Requested at Suvanto, set in Finland, is one such very gentle, warming book  that takes place in a sanatorium, where many a sauna is taken. A novel that will make you itch to move your digits over the ivories is Polly Samson's interwoven stories of a piano tuner who goes from house to house bringing instruments into perfect pitch. Each story tells the tale of a different household where a piano is tuned. The overrall effect is to make you want to play the piano constantly, and even if you do this while you read, on your leg, soundlessly, your fingers will be warmed.
Yours,
Ella and Suse
