POST NATAL DEPRESSION

Hi, a friend of mine has been diagnosed with post natal depression. What book can I surprise her with?
Yours,

Dear Seeking,
That's never easy to treat, as so much depends on what kind of books your friend likes to read; also when people are depressed, they often don't feel like reading. We highly reccommend listening to audio books in the first few months of having a baby- it can be a lovely thing to do while breastfeeding, or when feeding a baby with a bottle, and even during the many hours that one spends with a baby when one doesn't have free hands for reading books with. The audiobook can have a soothing effect not only on the mother, but on the baby too! We have both got through many a post-natal hour with audio-books playing in the background. Because one is often sleep-deprived and distracted, audiobooks of the more gripping variety are reccommended - and literature that is positive is desirable too. Depression has so many different expressions, that some people love to escape into thrillers, while others will enjoy more challenging literature. One of our favourite novels that is both challenging and ultimately upbeat is The Humans by Matt Haig. This describes an alien coming to the world to exterminate all the people who have access to a mathematical formula that will change our world. The alien lives as a human, and gradually discovers the joys and sorrows of love and mortality - which makes him think very differently about humanity. This is not a sci-fi book, we hasten to add - it is very much set in the real world, but with certain aspects of speculative fiction. Matt Haig himself is no stranger to depression, being a sufferer himself, and he has just written the excellent "Reasons to Stay Alive", a non-fiction book about his own experience of depression, and ways that he has found to combat it - we highly reccommend it.
Have a look at The Novel Cure itself for our list of the ten best books to cheer yourself up, and the ten best books for the very blue - and also the ten best audiobooks! Then you will be able to ascertain what your friend might best enjoy. Is she a reader of chick lit, or literary fiction, or crime? Feel free to let us know more.
All the best,
Ella and Suse

  • Yeah audio books are a great idea. They can get a bit pricey but there are some free audio book apps you can download that can be a good start.
