Dear Lonely,
One of the great things about reading is discovering you are not alone. In order to abet your ambition, we give you the brilliant Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber, which will encourage you not to give up. The heroine of this epic novel is great company, determined to better herself and rise above her humble origins. Set in Victorian London, this is a long way from your current life, but you will relate to the characters nonetheless. Reading the book will immerse you in a whole other world that will definitely save you from boredom and have you hooked.
Next, to help you to reach out to the people around you, we urge you to read the novels of RK Narayan, who will remind you of the joys of small town India. Yes, the world has changed alot since Narayan wrote these books, and yes, they describe a fictional slice of life anyway - but they are so full of wisdom and delight that they will keep you happy for weeks on end, and have you looking at your own neighbours in a whole new light. Start with Malgudi Days and move on from there.
All the best,
Ella and Suse
