LONE RANGER

Hello,

I am a 16 year boy who is very antisocial. I view friendship and having friends just drag me down. I always do my jobs alone and it turned out simply done, with no one to hinder me. Because of this, I became lone ranger and really want a book that will change my view.

Thanks
Dear Lone Ranger,
We worry that your antisocialness will lead you to shun society and become more and more introverted. It's a good thing that you are aware yourself that this could be a bad state of affairs, as some people in your position don't realise what could happen to them until it is too late. We will give you two books to read, one as a cautionary tale, and one as a book to inspire you into working more with other people, and seeing the merits of teamwork. The cautionary tale is Mick Jackson's The Underground Man, which describes the eccentric acts of the Duke of Portland, who decided to build a series of tunnels underneath his estate so that he could travel in his coach and horses for miles under the ground. This man spends endless amounts of time on his own, and he is a melancholy figure, though it turns out that he does have his reasons to behave in this way. Reading this book will show you how bad things could get, if you let yourself continue eternally down the solitary route
Now for a more positive book -and if you like, you could read this one first. Shane, by Jack Shaeffer, may appear to be a Western style novel, about a cowboy, but it is actually a brilliant coming of age novel, showing the dawning consciousness of a young boy, as he sees his father deal with the difficulties of life on a farm, alone. Along comes a lone ranger, by the name of Shane...who offers to help. For a time, their lives all improve, as Shane is so competent and strong. But what our hero learns is not about strength, but about the ways that men and women can help each other. Enjoy the message of this book and let it seep into your soul like the sounds of the axe cutting the tree stump in the novel.
Finally, read Patrick Ness's trilogy of books, Chaos Walking. These three novels describe the awakening soul of young Todd, who must face the challenge of understanding and changing his entire civilization, when he is only 13. Luckily, he has some people to help him. These books talk about the horrors of excessive communication, the joys of working towards a common goal, and the negative sides of group activities too You will find much within these pages to strike a chord, but you will also see the upsides of working with others.
Yours,
Ella and Suse
