KICKED IN THE HEAD

I made the mistake of thinking that I owned property so I started a
grassroots arts center which my brother, who also owned the property with me, sabotaged. Then the government came in and made me remove everything off of my land. I gave away the best ten years of my life for the betterment of mankind for zero remuneration and was kicked in the head by everybody. Needless to say, I no longer have the best view of the human race.
Didn't Know
Dear Unwitting,
That sounds like a terrible situation, and we very much hope you can look ahead to a future beyond this disaster. It's actually a remarkably similar scenario to Bernadette's crisis in the excellent novel "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" by Maria Semple. In this book, Bernadette was once a young architect with a vision that led her to build the '20 mile house', a house in which all the materials came from within a vicinity of 20 miles of the house, hence causing a tiny ecological impact. She was given a 'genius award' for this project. But, without giving away too much of the plot, her project and ambitions are destroyed. Twenty years later she is living in a crumbling house in Seattle, with nothing to look forward to.
Events conspire to catalyse her into new directions.
We feel that you will be inspired and energised by Bernadette's experience, and you too will find a different, positive future.
Yours,
Ella and Suse
