INDECISIVE

Dear Suse & Ella,
I am an art student approaching my final year of study which involves the rather difficult task of  choosing a novel to base a body of work upon. I am to extract the essence of the book and use it to inspire my year long
project. I would love to touch on the topic of climate change however rather than choosing an explicit/scientific novel ('silent spring', 'walden' etc) I'd love to use something a little more abstract. I'm currently thinking;
'Waiting for Godot', 'The Death of Ivan Ilych' & 'Blindness' - are there any others you could suggest or something more appropriate? I know these have no clear relation to climate change but perhaps the message is more
fundamental?
Cheers,
Indecisive
Dear Indecisive,
Lucky, lucky you! We are jealous, particularly Ella, as she was at art school and wishes she could have done such a cool project as this sounds. What fun! Your ideas all sound excellent, and we particularly love the idea of Blindness. But what about Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake trilogy? These would be fabulous for their imagery and their message of looking after our planet. Or The Road by Cormac McCarthy, or is that too obvious for you? Another fascinating option would be JG Ballard's the Crystal World, which shows a kind of climate change that is deeply sinister and alarming, in which plants, then people, become crystal. It is very hot, and does not seem so far away from possibility. The LIttle Prince? The Grapes of Wrath? Far From the Madding Crowd?Thomas Hardy would be fantastic, as he is pre-industrial revolution, but conscious of the coming change. That would be Ella's choice. We fear we have to leave this in your hands. But we'd love to see what you do! Please let us see your works when they are done.
Yours,
Ella and Suse

  • I’d recommend reading the dead lake by hamid ismailov. it’s just come out, set in Kazahkstan in the area where Soviets were testing various unpleasant weaponry….various issues concerning change, coming-of-age and more deeper seated notions of environmental change…

  • Hi Susie and Ella,
    Do you have a book remedy for someone who always changes ideas and projects, but is lazy and indecisive?
    Thanks, a lot,
