I no longer commute – and therefore I no longer read

Dear Ella and Susan,
I used to sit and devour novels by the armload while travelling on London transport to work. I would get so engrossed in a book that I would continue reading on the platform, up the stairs, down the street, past my boyfriend and to the couch.  Years later I live in Amsterdam, where we cycle everywhere, I'm not proficient in reading novels in Dutch yet and the only things I read are my nutrition texts. Please recommend some inspiring novels that will suck me in and make me lose myself for a moment!
Joyce
Dear Joyce,
Blessed are the cyclists of this Earth for they will go to Heaven when the Earth gets too hot to live on – but it's true that an unfortunate downside of powering one's own vehicle to work is less time to read in the enforced captivity of a train. Oh, the cruelty of this conundrum! Ella urges you to plug into an audio book while on your bike – as long as you keep the volume low enough to hear warning trills and hoots from anyone you're about to collide with. Susan reckons you should construct a reading nook (in the style of a train carriage perhaps?) and commit to spending at least an hour in it every day, in lieu. Either way, we prescribe History of a Pleasure Seeker by Richard Mason – wonderfully immersive, set in Holland to boot, and about someone whose determination to seek their own particular pleasure will crank up your determination to re-find your own. And, as an entrée into the world of Dutch literature, In the Dutch Mountains by Caes (that's Case to you and I) Noteboome. Brilliant, weird, dark, fun.
We prescribe - History of a Pleasure Seeker by Richard Mason
