DAILY ABUSE

Dear Suse and Ella,
Five years ago , I was daily abused by my stephfather. The consequences are very high: low self-esteem, depression, ptsd, anxiety of failure, burn-out... I have a fear that I will never be happy again and am daily remembered of the abuse. I hope you will give me some book suggestions to get through these hard times.
Kind Regards.
Dear Abused,
We are very sad to hear of your awful past, and we have every hope that you will find the means to recover. We urge you to seek professional counselling. There are two great novels that we feel could help you by seeing your own situation echoed, and discovering through the fictional characters, ways of surviving and moving on. Edward St Aubyn's At Last is the final novel in a five book cycle that describes Patrick Melrose's abuse at the hands of his father from the age of five, up to his discovery of a measure of peace. You should read all five novels, starting with Never Mind- they are now available in one volume. You will find these cathartic, shocking, brutal and very beautifully written, with dark humour pervading the horror. We think that these will give you a sense of a possible future. Then read 'The Bone People" by Keri Hulme, which is also a book that explores abuse, but in a much less clearly spelt out way.
The book explores the relationshipsbetween three people- Simon, a mute boy who was washed up on the shore of New Zealand and adopted by Joe, a Maori, plus Kerewin, a complex, artistic woman who has made herself a hermit. This is a complex book that takes you on a journey of discovery about just what happened to Simon to make him mute, and also how the other two points of their unlikely triangle can connect up. The overrall effect is healing and positive, with some dark areas to experience on the way.
Yours,
Ella and Suse
