CONCERNED ABOUT DAUGHTER

Dear Ella and Suse,
My 12 year old daughter has suffered with anxiety since she was 6 years old. The main problem is her inability to sleep in her own bed without me (her Mom).   Any suggestions?
Concerned about Daughter
Dear Concerned,
Poor you and your daughter! That sounds difficult. We imagine that you may be seeing counsellors about this, but from our bibliotherapy practice, we would take the following route -
We suggest that you should read The Member of the Wedding, by Carson McCullers, for this is a book that will encourage you to see the world through your daughter's eyes, and help her to find ways of dealing with her anxieties. The novel is written through the eyes of a girl of similar age to your daughter, who feels a terrible sense of not belonging to any thing, to any group or to any gang. It begins in fact with her father suggesting that it is time that she should go to sleep in her own bed, rather than his - she too has been suffering from an inability to sleep on her own, and has enjoyed an innocent togetherness with her father. She gradually moves in circles beyond her small family life, and finds through her adventures that she can indeed cope with the unknown.
We suggest that your daughter reads Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. This is a beautifully ilustrated book for children, that shows a young girl striving to help her poor family find better fortune. She enlists the aid of a dragon to help her, and her adventures gain her courage and knowledge on the way. Combining Chinese folklore with contemporary sensibilities, this book will help your daughter find her inner strength to face her fears.
Yours,
Ella and Suse
