BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED

Dear Ella and Suse,

I really, really like my boss at work, (guy A) who I'm not sure likes me back. But I am also conflicted thinking my friend (guy B) and coworker likes me as well (even though he has a girlfriend), and it's ruining my chances with guy A. We are great friends, but sometimes I think he might like me more, and I think it's starting to put guy A off. I need a book to get my mind off of this cluster, as well as some sage advice from you wonderful ladies!

I want to be with guy A, and not with guy B. In all parties involved, it seems theres an air of unrequited love felt on some side or another.

Sincerely,
Bothered & Bewildered
Dear Bothered and Bewildered,
This sounds highly complex, and we get the feeling that guy B is rather in the way, and as he has a girlfriend, he should move over anyway. Your situation is not dissimilar, some would say, to that of Bathsheba in Far from the Madding Crowd. She has set her sights on a man of means, when she is loved by the stolid, reliable but poor Gabriel Oak. The twists and turns of her love-life will distract you from your own situation, and perhaps the different paradigms of manhood that she encounters will make you wonder more deeply what you are after with your guys. On a more light-hearted note, read I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, in which our young heroine Cassandra meets two very attractive brothers...and she and her sister flirt with young love with degrees of success and disaster. Cassandra's acerbic wit and joie de vivre will encourage you in your pursuit of the right man, while also pointing out to you the follies of setting too much store on love alone...Cassandra is ultimately more interested in her career than in the men that flock to her door, and you might take a leaf out of her book too!
Yours,
Ella and Suse
